What does it mean to "think about a problem?" To have an "intuition" about something? How do we turn the information from our senses into an understanding of the world? Cognitive Science is the interdisciplinary study of just such mental processes of reasoning, guessing and feeling, of using language, recognizing objects and navigating through complex environments. Its goal is to describe human intelligence, and to determine how physical systems (brains) can represent the world (minds) in a way that produces intelligent behavior.

Minds and brains are not the same any more than Windows XP is the same as the laptop computer that runs those programs. But, it is also true that the structure of each is intimately related to the structure of the other. Mental and physical systems must unite to produce human thought.
