Popular concepts of Middle Eastern culture are diverse, and often shaped by misunderstanding or a lack of information. The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) is one of 15 federally-funded National Resource Centers devoted to the study of the Middle East. A non-degree-granting unit, CMES' mission is to advance understanding of the Middle East through education, support and community outreach. The Center has a multifaceted program of outreach activities, including public forums on current events, lectures, cultural activities and travel opportunities.
The cornerstone of the K-12 outreach program is an annual accredited three-day Teachers' Workshop for K-12 educators. Primary objectives are to enhance knowledge of the region and its peoples; to combat misinformation and stereotypes about the Middle East; to provide teachers with resources and materials for classroom use; and to help teachers relate knowledge of the Middle East to the lives of their students.
