Ever since its appearance in ancient Greece, the discipline of philosophy has sought answers to some of the most difficult, perplexing and fundamental questions continuously confronting people. Philosophy hopes deeply and finally to understand the nature of human experience as focused on both the self and the world. Philosophers analyze the structure of the mind and the ultimate nature of reality. Philosophy also directly and objectively addresses the final questions of morality and value faced by individuals, institutions and societies.

The Department of Philosophy is recognized as one of the most outstanding philosophy programs in the world in light of its strengths in the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, the history of philosophy, moral and political philosophy, metaphysics and epistemology, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of science and mathematics.
