• SBS has 14 Regents’ Professors: Vance Haynes, Jane Hill, Mark Nichter, John Olsen, David Soren, and Richard Wilkinson in anthropology; Oscar Martinez and Michael Schaller in history; Julia Annas and Keith Lehrer in philosophy; Susan Karant-Nunn in Late Medieval and Reformation Studies; Diana Liverman in geography; and Tom Bever and Ofelia Zepeda in linguistics. Regents’ Professorships are only given to faculty scholars of exceptional ability who have achieved national and international distinction.
• Many SBS faculty receive Fulbright scholarships, including Maribel Alvarez in the Southwest Center, Joseph Galaskiewicz in sociology, Nicole Guidotti-Hernandez in Gender and Women’s Studies, Anna Ochoa O’Leary in the Mexican American and Raza Studies, and Maggy Zanger in journalism.
• Julia Annas in philosophy has been elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Michael Schiffer in anthropology has been elected into the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
• Diane Austin in anthropology, Celestino Fernandez in sociology, and Sally Stevens in the Southwest Institute for Research on Women are Distinguished Outreach Professors.
• Thomas Bever in linguistics and Steve Kuhn in anthropology received the Humboldt Research Award.
• Emma Blake in anthropology won the 2012-2013 Rome Prize in the area of Ancient Studies. The prize, given by the American Academyj in Rome, is awarded to 30 emerging artists and scholars in the early or middle stages of their careers and represent the highest standard of excellence in the arts and humanities.
• Diana Liverman in the School of Geography and Development received the Founders Gold Medal from the Royal Geographical Society.
• Gary Paul Nabhan in the Southwest Center, Brackette Williams in anthropology, and Ofelia Zepeda in linguistics have all received the MacArthur “genius” award.
• Anthropology Professor Mark Nichter is a Social Science advisor to the World Health Organization. He has received the prestigous Wellcome Medal from the Royal Anthropological Institute.
• Mark Nichter and Mimi Nichter in anthropology have both received the Margaret Mead Award from the American Anthropological Association.
• J. Jefferson Reid in the School of Anthropology is a University Distinguished Professor.
• Terry Wimmer in journalism received a Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting.
